Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer that is nearly always caused by exposure to asbestos

. In this disease, malicious cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Its most typical site is the pleura ( outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall ), but it might also occur in the peritoneum ( the lining of the abdominal cavity ), the heart, the pericardium ( a sac that surrounds the heart ) or tunica vaginalis.

The existing mesothelioma cures and diagnosis methods have been found wanting for a number of reasons. The disease lies harmless till the very last stages, making timely cancer detection difficult. The most prevalent cancer treatment methods like surgery, chemotherapy and radiation or a combination of these have hade no notable success so far. Some many mesothelioma patients willingly allow themselves to be experimented thus helping themselves and future generations. Seeing the improvements the scientists have made in this regard so far, there is a hope that an effective cure is at the door. Many are there earnestly waiting for such a dawn to arrive.

Now, mesothelioma research is done by professionals connected with drug companies and research groups. But they are funded mostly by the government. These researchers have developed some therapies including photodynamic therapy, intensity modulated radiation and immunotherapy. In photodynamic therapy, fixed frequency lights are employed to detect cancerous cells and then they are destroyed using photosensitizing drugs. Intensity modulated radiation therapy attacks the affected area specifically which helps in saving the near by healthy cells and tissues. Immunotherapy improves the inherent defense system of the body. This gives the body the immunity to fight against the offensive cells.

From the continuous mesothelioma research activities, we can conclude one thing, ie, the society is aware about the disease, which can prove fatal. It may be cent percent true that the new mode of therapies and strategies may take their own time to give predicted results. But the coming results are the result of ever widening public awareness about the disease.
