As a rule a bow tie is reserved for only the most formal of occasions, with the absolute smartest being a white bow tie. Black bow ties are ideal for formal situations that specify black tie, as a necktie may not be formal enough.
If you would prefer to wear a bow tie for a semi formal occasion, but are worried about being over dressed then opt for a coloured or patterned bow tie. At less formal events a necktie should be formal enough, with informal parties requiring no neckwear at all.
The colour/ pattern on a basic tie is a personal choice, as is the knot you use. Just pick something you like and feel comfortable in, particularly for smart/ casual or informal occasions.
Choosing the right shoes
As a general rule, smart shoes should be worn to any work party, no matter how formal. This shows a degree of care and attention to how you're dressed, as well as being a precautionary measure. If the party continues at a nightclub after-hours you may need to wear formal shoes to get in.
Your shoes should match, or compliment your suit. So a grey suit may be worn with either black or brown shoes. But if you're wearing a black suit, then brown shoes should be avoided
