Marketing 101 from a Child's perspective

Marketing 101 from a Child's perspective

Not too long ago my 6 year old daughter in 1st grade invited me on her journey

, in our neighborhood, to solicit sponsorships for her school's "Lap-A-thon"( doing laps around the school gym). Her eagerness to start this trek was so contagious, that her other siblings decided to be a witness to this phenomenon, and for my son, I think is was sheer curiosity, because he has been afforded opportunities like this before, but outright decline.

Her initial joy of doing something so worthwhile, and noble, almost turn into fear, when she realized her first knock turned into a "no". I then pulled her aside, and looked in her eyes, and ask,"how are you feeling,do you want to continue?", but the look in her eyes, and her replied was, "There must be somebody who will say yes" just outright amazing was my thought. Lesson #1-For every nos', you are closer to a yes. With the next house she appeared to be more confident and ask the person, if he could help her by being a sponsor. How could he not help a little girl with such conviction in her voice, and certainly I was within helping distance(smile).

Lesson #2- Be confident and remember the greatest asset you have, is "You".My daughter was marketing herself and at that moment it wasn't about the school's goal, but it became rather personal, because she needed the help. This reminded me,that people, "don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care".With each victory, her eyes began to sparkle, and you could see that she was having fun.Now let me also point out that her other siblings have now caught the joy of marketing, and they too wanted to take turn, but my little campaigner reminded them, that it was her moment in the spotlight, because she was wiling to absorbed that initial rejection. Lesson #3- Take ownership for your own marketing journey, whatever that might be, and let no one take your spotlight away from you. Take time and celebrate your accomplishment regardless of how big or small it is.My wonderful 6 year old daughter Kimberly, did just that, especially when she found out that she raised $85.00 in sponsorship in less than a hour.
