Marfan Syndrome Treatment

Marfan syndrome is a very serious disorder that causes a number of problems

. Because there is no cure for Marfan syndrome at this time, treatment options often focus on preventative measures and treating secondary illnesses and conditions. It is important to know the treatment options for MFS because often, with proper treatment and care, those with Marfan syndrome live to be in their 60s at least and enjoy a life that is much closer to normal than others who go untreated. Treatments vary greatly and depend on the symptoms of the individual.

Lungs

The very first thing a doctor will tell anyone with Marfan syndrome is to absolutely refrain from smoking. With chronic problems like COPD and emphysema, smoking will only irritate and possibly deterior lung problems. A doctor will encourage you to keep your regular checkups, as catching a problem early on is critical to treating it. Further complications could be caused by physical contact sports and strenuous physical activities, so doctors often counsel those with MFS not to engage in either of these things to avoid the risk. There are several medications and methods to treat most of the lung problems related to Marfan syndrome.

Cardiovascular System

Affection of the cardiovascular system and heart weakness is common in people with Marfan syndrome, and there are a number of ways to treat secondary cardiovascular conditions for these people. Medications that are meant to reduce the heart rate and pressure on the heart valves and/or aorta are frequently prescribed. Regular checkups that include an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart and valves) are strenuously stressed. Surgery is also an option for those who have leaky or dysfunctional heart valves sometimes they might be replaced, while sometimes they may just be repaired.

Eyes

Eye problems like detached retina, dislocated lens, cataracts and glaucoma are all common in those with MFS. Treatment for these eye problems include cataract surgery, in which a new lens is placed after the old one is removed. Another treatment for eye problems is surgery for the dislocated lens or detached retina. Regular eye exams are a must because eye problems are usually a very early onset problem in people affected by Marfan syndrome. Glasses or contacts are often necessary for myopia or nearsightedness that often plagues MFS patients.

Skeletal System

Long arms, legs, fingers and toes that are the signature of a person with MFS cannot be corrected or treated by medical means, and usually they do not cause much of a problem. Scoliosis is a very serious concern among those with MFS, and this sign is fairly treatable. Back braces are often helpful, and regular checkups with x-rays of the back are very important to monitor any change in the way the back is situated. Surgery may be required for severe cases of scoliosis. Funnel or pigeon chest (only one or the other) are often seen in those with MFS as well, and is corrected by surgery in severe cases.
