The Duke Blue devils emerged out of one of their closest games yet with a victory and another trip to the Sweet Sixteen. They beat the Michigan Wolverines with heart-stopping scores of 73-71 on Sunday at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC. Despite leading for much of the game and almost running away with a blowout, Duke fell apart later in the game and it all came down to one last shot attempt by Michigan.
Unfortunately Michigan's Daruis Morris missed that shot with 2 seconds left on the clock and Duke took the last rebound in a flash. And with that, there was no upset, not even an overtime in which to get a second chance victory. No. 8 Michigan gave the Blue Devils a run for their money, but started their run to make it a game a little too late.
The head coach of the Duke's Mike Krzyzewski improved to 900-283 overall and is just one win away from his own college coach and mentor's record. If ever the Dukes would once again emerge victorious next weekend, he will be able to tie Bob Knight's total amount of wins and a trip to the NCAA championship game will earn him enough wins to pass the record.
This is a very eerie win over the Wolverines and is very similar to the game against the Butler just last year in the NCAA championship match. The dramatic two-point win decided by a missed shot at the buzzer absolutely felt as though it's dj vu to some of the players on the court. The only difference in this year's match was that the Wolverines missed their final shot a lot closer to the basket than the Butler's half-court Hail Mary last year.
Duke's Nolan Smith pulled out 24 points, while Kyle Singler managed to shoot 13 of his own. The Blue Devils shot 51 percent from the field and were ahead the entire duration of the second half. The team will now travel to Anaheim, CA for a Thursday night game to decide the West Regional Semifinals. Duke is the 9 point favorite to win that game against Arizona, while the total is set at 144.5.
