Many Women Experience A Hormone Balancing Act With Pms Symptoms

Many women experience the balancing act of hormones

, help is here! We explain how things like B-Complex, GLA, Calcium & more can help with those PMS & Estrogen symptoms.

Hormones.The Balancing Act

Its not just puberty and menopause: Women experience hormonal changes throughout their lives. New research shows the onset of menopausal symptoms is often linked to hallmarks of the modern Western lifestyle, including nutrient-poor diets of refined foods, alcohol consumption, smoking, chronic stress, depression, lack of exercise and exposure to endocrine- disrupting toxins found in common household products.

For the next several weeks, we will share information on this important issue for women (and men) with some direct steps you can take to feel your absolute best at any age.

Well begin with the pregnancy years.

Hormones tend to be more stable when women are in their 20s and 30s, unless they have a ton of stress in their lives. Ordinarily, estrogen is high in the first half of your cycle. Then estrogen comes down and progesterone goes up: they both plunge right before your period.

But many women, (with estimates as many as 80 percent) have a condition known as estrogen dominance. This is an imbalance believed to be triggered by excess body fat, poor diet, stress, and exposure to estrogenic factors in the environment, such as toxins leached from most plastics and common household cleaning and personal care products. Either theres too much estrogen in the system or not enough progesterone to balance the estrogen.

Estrogen dominance can cause PMS symptoms to be worse. Common PMS symptoms include headaches, breast tenderness, irritability, depression, bloating, and cravings. Estrogen is the hormone that makes things grow, like the uterine lining. But it also grows cysts, fibroids, and cancers. Progesterone is the balancer. (More on progesterone in an upcoming blog)

To feel your best during these years, we strongly recommend adding premium quality supplements to a healthy diet. Shut down PMS crankiness with a B-complex supplement. Vitamin B6 is one of the necessary ingredients required by the body to manufacture dopamine, one of the mood neurotransmitters. We highly recommend the B-Complex by Shaklee because it was designed to deliver a high potency of the B vitamins to the consumer in properly balanced amounts. It delivers all eight B vitamins in proper ratios that are consistently related to the amounts needed by the body daily. Supplying the same amount (in milligrams) of each B vitamin, as some other brands do, does not give your body the proper balance because your body requires different amounts of each of the B vitamins daily.

Compared with women who dont have premenstrual symptoms, researchers have found some women with PMS have lower blood levels of calcium around their time of ovulation. And when PMS sufferers take 1000 to 1200 milligrams of calcium supplements daily, their mood and bloating improve after just a few months. Just as was found with calcium, some women with PMS seem to have lower blood levels of magnesium compared with women who did not have PMS symptoms. Women with PMS who ate ample magnesium-rich foods had better mood and less water retention than women who did not get enough magnesium. Magnesium helps regulate the activity of serotonin-called the feel-good neurotransmitter.

Osteomatrix by Shaklee provides calcium and magnesium along with the other critical nutrients that are needed to enable the calcium/magnesium to be absorbed Osteomatrix has clinically proven absorption of calcium and magnesium nutrients.

To ease cramps and help with other estrogen-dominance symptoms, try GLA, or gamma-linolenic acid. GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid that our bodies use to form prostaglandins potent, hormone-like substances that help the body to regulate many normal body functions.

Many people are deficient in GLA because the conversion of LA to GLA can be blocked or impeded by numerous factors. These include: excessive cholesterol intake from diets rich in meat, eggs and dairy products; excessive intake of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, hydrogenated oils and trans-fats; excessive alcohol consumption; aging; zinc deficiency; viral infections cold-pressed and filtered; diabetes and pre-diabetic conditions; and high sugar consumption.

To circumvent any of these blockages, supplementation with GLA certainly makes sense. GLA is most commonly produced from evening primrose or borage seed oils. The Shaklee researchers chose borage seed oil as its source because it has a higher concentration of GLA than evening primrose oil, which means less oil (and fewer calories) is needed to provide an effective daily dosage.

The borage oil used in Shaklee's GLA Complex is derived from Canadian grown borage plants (Latin name: Borago officinalis). This small flowering herb, grown in Saskatchewan under carefully controlled farming conditions, is pesticide-free. The seeds are harvested and shipped to a modern edible oil-processing facility near Saskatoon where they are to yield the GLA-rich borage oil. No solvents are used to extract the oil from the seeds; no chemicals are used to alter the oil that is produced. As with all the nutrition supplements from Shaklee, these products are gluten free and contain no artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors or preservatives.

Our next blog will further explore other estrogen exposures that come from environmental and dietary sources. Be sure to check back. Part 1 of our 3 part series on Women & Hormones. See the resource box below for more goodies!
