Chicago native Richard Simon is an enthusiastic entertainer, and nothing brings out his inner party planner quite like the Christmas/Chanukah season. From Christmas caroling to volunteering at soup kitchens to throwing a four day Holiday Bash unlike any other, Simon embraces the spirit of the season wholeheartedly every year. Simon and his wife Sophie decorate their home inside and out and have long been a well-known stop for people looking for the most festively decorated houses during the holidays. One of the most often asked questions upon seeing the Simon's magnificent display of lights is how long it takes to put all of those lights up. Simon laughed when asked and said "I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. It is a Simon State Secret."
Rick Simon's gregariousness is well known in the circles in which he travels. Simon, his wife and five children annually throw an early December open house to benefit the children of Chicago's homeless shelters. Everyone is asked to bring an unwrapped gift for children ranging in age from 1 year to 12 years old and a donation for food for the shelters. Simon then loads his car up with the gifts, while his wife follows with the food and Mr. and Mrs. Simon deliver Christmas to hundreds of less fortunate Chicago area families every December 23rd. On December 24th, an army of volunteer Santa Clauses arrive at the shelters to distribute the gifts and bring a little magic into the lives of children who have been displaced from their homes.
Simon and his family start their Christmas celebrations on the 23rd with a neighborhood caroling party. Each home is responsible for a different dish or drink (for both the kids and the adults), and as they move through the neighborhood caroling, the group grows progressively larger. The destination is the Simon residence, where dessert and libations are served amongst neighbors sharing in the cheer of the season.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are strictly family affairs for the Simons. A lovely meal followed by gift giving and Midnight Mass comprises the Simon family's Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day, some community service is blended with family togetherness for a truly philanthropic view on the holiday. A Simon family tradition is to spend the first part of Christmas Day serving meals at a soup kitchen. Simon and his wife believe that giving back to the community they love as a family tradition instills in their children and unshakeable moral center that will serve them well in whatever they take on in their lives.
Finally, on December 26th, the Simons open their home to friends for a feast.
