The pristine beaches and cobalt blue oceans of the Maldives have always been a major draw for tourists entering the country. Majority of the 1,190 islands are uninhabited and exciting to discover. The Maldives is believed to have been formed from a prehistoric volcano that left coral behind in its wake and sunk in to the ocean. Those with a PADI license will be able to enjoy countless number of dives, but those without one also have the opportunity of getting some basic training before the initial dive. There are plenty of diving schools around and operators who rent equipment. Going out to the further reaches of the ocean is also not necessary, by swimming a few minutes away from the shore; one could see plenty of life in the surrounding coral. Wreck diving is also a popular tourist activity on the islands.
For the not so adventurous, snorkelling is a relatively cheaper and safer option to diving. Deep sea fishing is yet another sport that is extremely rewarding. Cruising along in a catamaran during sunset will prove to be a mesmerizing experience.
The surf enthusiast will discover that the months from June to September are ideal for surfing, where the waves can reach as high as 8 feet. Both the North and South Atolls have excellent areas for surfing. Kayaking, sea-canoeing, kite surfing, water skiing, jet skiing and windsurfing are other water sports available in the Maldives.
Maldives is also ranked among the top 5 places to see dolphins and whales. There are over 20 different species of dolphin that can be spotted during a sighting along with the migrating whales that can be seen on season.
