Tourists approaching Meeru Island in the Maldives can be forgiven for thinking they
are heading for one of the regions hundreds of uninhabited atolls - a location untouched by humankind.This is not the case however.
For Meeru Island, or Meerufenfushi Island to give it its proper name, is an island resort that has much to offer a traveller looking for a Maldives holiday experience that is predominately geared towards unadulterated fun and relaxation.
Meerufenfushi, for those who do not know, is translated as Sweet Water Island, an appropriate alias for sure.
Located on the easternmost tip of the North Male Atoll, Meeru Island is perhaps the ultimate chill-out destination. Meeru Island is not just for those looking to do nothing but relax though. It is also an activity hotspot with numerous cracking water and land-based sports for tourists to indulge in and enjoy. A dedicated fitness centre provides the gateway to the likes of kayaking, tennis, volleyball, and badminton.
Meeru Island is also the proud host of one of the largest diving schools in the area and the islands relatively remote location means that a certain amount of exclusivity is very much the norm.
A number of sporting experts are based on the island should the less experienced sporting enthusiast require a helping hand. Snorkelling, windsurfing, and golf driving lessons lasting 30 minutes are available to curb inhibitions and maximise enjoyment. For families there is a wading pool for smaller children and a mini golf course for slightly older kids.
Entertainment of the non-sporting variety is provided by a jam-packed schedule of dancing shows, competitions, a disco, the latest films, and live music chosen to appeal to the young and the relatively old alike. Themed evenings, such as the regular divers event, are very popular and always provide plenty of fun and laughter.
Accommodation on Meeru Island consists in the main of Beach and Water Villas. Each type sleeps up to three adults, or for families, two adults and two children. The facilities found in the Villas normally include king-sized or twin beds, a partial open-air shower, air-conditioning, a ceiling fan, broadband internet access, a phone, cable TV, seating area, a CD player, a hairdryer, a minibar, tea and coffee making services, beach towels, complimentary toiletries, a nightly turndown service, and a private terrace set back from the water's edge.
For those visiting Meeru Island with romantic inclinations, a small tropical garden and a large balcony offering tremendous views of the island adds considerably to the seductive allure. The piece-de-la-resistance however is the Jacuzzi for two which just has to be the ultimate wet dream for honeymooners and loving couples.
