This article is continuation to Making on Online Presence I and it will discuss

about domain name servers, configuring them, file transfer protocol.

What are Domain Name Servers (DNS)?

Domain name servers (DNS) provide the link between your domain name (mywebsite.com) and your Internet Protocol (IP) address. The IP address is a series of numbers like this: 123.456.78.9. Every web server has a unique IP address which, in the case of dedicated servers hosting a single domain, is equivalent to the domain name. A site hosted on a dedicated server will respond to either 123.456.78.9 or mywebsite.com by serving the requested webpage.

Most websites, though, are hosted on shared servers. This means that one server is home to many different websites, but they each have the same IP address. If you type in a shared IP address you will get an error page or will be redirected to the web hosting companys web site. So DNS is necessary for websites on shared servers. Domain names are the only way to request these websites they cannot be requested by IP address.

How to Configure Domain Name Servers (DNS)?

If you purchase domain name and web hosting from different service provider then your default DNS will be the DNS of your domain name provider. Until you arrange for a web host, the registrar company will usually redirect requests for your domain name to an error page or an Under Construction page.

A DNS configuration looks something like this:

Primary Name Server: NSA.NEWDAYDNS.COM (204.50.14.2)

Secondary Name Server: NSB.NEWDAYDNS.COM (204.50.22.2)

Your hosting provider will provide you the details about the name servers. You need to enter in your hosting control panel with your username and password in order to change the DNS. On the other hand, if you have bought domain name and web hosting from the same service provider then they will usually make the necessary changes for you when they set up your account.

After you change the DNS, it will take around 24 hours for your site to be accessible from everywhere in the world.

After you have opened an account with a web host and set the DNS you can start uploading your web pages. The most common way to do this is to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software but there are also some other options.

What is File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is needed to transfer files/folders from your local computer to a remote server. For example, if you want to publish a Web site, an FTP program is needed to transfer all Web content you create to the Web host server. FTP programs are also used to upload and manage files in hosting account directories. FTP Programs such as FileZilla, Cute FTP or SmartFTP can also be used to upload files/folders to your Web site.

How to upload the web files to the server?

1. Collect all your web site files (HTML, GIF, JPEG, etc.) on your computer.

2. Using the FTP software (CuteFTP, FileZilla or SmartFTP), make a connection to your web server by using your ftp username and password. Browse to the folder where you want to upload files.

3. Your account will probably have two main folders in the root directory public_html and www. Your web pages should be uploaded to the public_html folder. Make certain that your homepage is called index.php

4. Go to the "File Manager" button on your hosting control panel and you can check all the files you have uploaded.
