Making It Big In Graphic Design

Designing and developing marketing collaterals is a daunting task

. Novice designers in the field of graphic design would somehow feel intimidated if not overwhelmed by the task of developing something unique. Be it for flyers, brochures or booklet printing, developing marketing campaign collaterals involves a lot of effort, not to mention patience and perseverance.

Professional graphic artists are paid a good amount of money to create something that would ultimately increase the sales of any business. It is their job to make the pancakes of a particular restaurant sell like, well, hotcakes. Every booklet printing, every brochure printing, every flyer printing must be made more attractive, more interesting. The challenge for the graphic artists is to outdo not only their competition but also themselves. In other words, these designers are expected to create a better design than their most recent one. This is the challenge every professional graphic artist is confronted with every time they are at their drawing boards. Well, you might think that every design has been conceived. But good designers are those that experiment and try out new things in order to create their magnum opus.

Experience is what makes graphic designers different from one another. Experience is what makes seasoned graphic designers a cut above the rest. Experience is what sets them apart from those that are just starting out. This is the reason why I said that a novice designer would find it difficult because it would take years for a graphic designer to get the experience as well as the expertise to create works of art. The problem is every company or business is looking for someone with experience yet none are willing to give experience. So how would a budding graphic designer penetrate this exclusive world of graphic designing?

The following points would give any novice graphic designer a shot at making it big in the field:

Know the competition. There are successful graphic designers and there are those that are not so successful ones. The only thing common with these two types is the fact that they are in the same field. So why are others more successful? What made others fail? Understand the difference between the two types. Know what made others a success and learn why others failed.

Study. What is written in your text book may not be what is happening in reality. Be attuned to what is actually going on. Know the current market trends. In an economic slowdown, develop creative proposals to make your marketing collaterals such as your print booklets still work despite the dampened appetite to purchase. Research on how you can make marketing collaterals less expensive like developing cheap booklet printing strategies or cheap flyer printing strategies.

Find a Mentor. The easiest way to be recognized is to be associated with an established, highly acclaimed, very experienced mentor. This way, you get to learn the tricks of the trade while building a name for yourself. Who knows later on when you have mastered everything, you might have the chance to inherit your mentor's client base.

At the end of the day, the challenge to any professional graphic designer is to come up with something uniquely original and exceptionally interesting. This is no mean feat even for seasoned marketing professionals. One does not only have to have the skills; it is also extremely important to have the experience.

What designs work? What would sell? What graphics capture what the business wants to say? What color combinations would suit a particular market segment? For every marketing collateral design project such as booklet printing or flyer printing, these are the questions one has to contend with.
