Shore Temple:
This charming temple located on the shore is among the most famous tourist attractions in Mahabalipuram. It was built during the 7th century by the artisan Rajasimha under the rule of Narasimha Varman II. This is one of the oldest temples that can be found in South India built in the Dravidian style. The architectural glory and sculptured beauty make this temple a must see attraction of this place. This temple consists of three separate buildings two are Shiva's temples situated on east and west direction and the third is a Vishnu temple. The magnificent architecture this temple places it in world heritage sites of the UNESCO.
Five Rathas:
Also known as Panch Rathas is an excellent example of the Dravidian style rock cut temples. It is among the most visited attractions of this place visited by scores of tourists who come here from several parts of the globe. These Rathas (chariots) are five in a number which was carved out of a single rock in 7th century. These five chariots are dedicated to five Pandava brothers namely Yudhister, Arjuna, Bhima, Nakula, Sahadev and Draupadi wife of Pandava. They were the legendary heroes of the Hindu Holy Scripture Mahabharata who fought against the war of injustice.
Arjuna's Penance:
This is another architectural grandiose renowned for its open-air bas-relief made on two huge boulders of 31 meters long and 9 meters high. The entire surface has detailed carvings depicting a scene from Mahabharata. The great hero of Mahabharata Arjuna dominates this grand structure. On either sides of the rock one can see various images of demi-gods, birds, beasts, and Nagas and Nymphs all mingling into the theme of Arjuna's penance.
