Madame Fling Flong, Sydney, Australia - Review

Right in the busy life of Newtown lives a chic lady doing films, food and beverages so good you'll fall over backwards when you read the price tags. Madame Flingflong is her name and she's bringing competitive retro to the streets of the Inner West.

Opened in 2005, Madame Flingflong boasts clean brick walls, apple green tones and polished floorboards. Highlight for us though, is that this place employs some of the friendliest people. During the night, we had everyone from the kitchen hand to the owner popping over to make sure we were having a great time. While the front room is packed out, the back section, near the kitchen, makes for a great space with small tables and cute booths.

Owner, Sonya Mara opened the place because she was finding Sydney bars boring. "Everything was starting to get repetitive," said Mara. "We've created a place where anyone is welcome, anyone can wear what ever they please and our food and cocktails are affordable and have a European theme."

Speaking of which, staff really do know what they're doing behind the bar when it comes to cocktails. Madame Flingflong does some of the cheapest and best cocktails I've tasted in Sydney in a very long time. They've taken an 80's favourite and given it a glorious twist. The Moroccan Bloody Mary features the usual organic vodka, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon and tomato juice. The twist is the dash of paprika and harissa paste. My friend says the Pink Fling is just like an average Cosmopolitin with organic vodka, cointreau, cranberry and lime shaken together. Madame Coco is the real stand out though. It's a heavenly mix of creme de cacao, frangelico and baileys gently blended with milk. Served in a chocolate sauce coated glass, the masterpiece is complete only when the fairy chocolate powder is lightly dusted over the top.

Cocktails head south from $12 and they've got a small list of wines nicely priced too. For between $6 and $8 a glass, you'll find brilliant drops from Italy, New Zealand and Geographe Bay in Western Australia. Beers wise, they stock a couple of golden international labels from France, Germany and Portugal starting at $5. We like the Kronenbourg which is on tap.

When your done gushing over the drinks, order a few share plates and your evening is set. The menu isn't huge [people don't come here to eat as such], but you won't go home hungry either. We get ourselves a chef's mezze plate and we're told the selections change daily depending on what's hot at the markets. Chef, Yannas Alexandardos selects a bunch of cured meats, cold dips served with warm pitta bread and pickled vegetables for only $25. If cheese is your thing, you've come to the right place! The mushrooms stuffed with cheese [$12], and the eggplant fritters topped with fetta [$11], are to die for! You'll love the ever changing selections on the cheese platter too. For $18, we got marinated cherry bocconcini of mozzarella, Brie and pecorino with a side of watercrackers and dried dates, apple and pears.

Sweets like the Spanish churros aren't the best we've had. They are way too soft and don't have an amazingly crunchy taste. The hot chocolate dipping sauce served alongside them is perfectly thick and creamy though. If your not keen for a cake, the kitchen churns out their own ice-creams and sorbets.

And, in keeping with the independent vibe of the place, Madame Fling Flong holds film nights. Every Tuesday, catch cult and foreign movies from 7.30. You can grab yourself a ticket to the weekly film, a drink and a mezze plate for the friendly price of $20. Who said fun times came with a hefty price!
