Founded in 1924 MG was a British Sports car manufacturer. MG was or is known best for its 2 seater open top sports car, the MGF. Throughout the years MG also produced saloons and coupes; it has also been used on sportier versions of other marques most recently for Rover which belonged to its parent group.
The original version of the MGB was based at the Abington plant, near Oxford. The Abington plant produced many rally and race winning cars however the plant was shut down in 1980 and production of the MGB was ceased.
During 1982 and 1991 the MG badge was revived on sportier models of the Austin Rover Metro, Maestro and Montego. The MG marque was once again revived very soon after on the MG RV8; the RV8 was an updated MGB Roadster with a Rover V8 engine.
The "proper" revival came in 1995 when the MG F two seater roadster was launched. The MG F was an instant hit in the market and sold in volumes much greater than anticipated.
The MG marque along with the Rover marque was passed to the MG Rover group in May 2000 as part of BMW's restructuring of the Rover Group. This meant the MG badge was used on the sportier Rover models and the new MG F, renamed the MG TF.
All production of MG Rover vehicles ceased in 2005 when MG Rover went into administration. MG models along with Rover models are still selling well in the 2nd hand market.
