The Maldives, officially known as the Republic of Maldives
, is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean. It is made up of a chain of islands grouped into atolls, which spread over an area of roughly 90,000 square kilometres. The capital, and largest city in the Maldives is Mal, home to the main airport for the Maldives and it is generally from here that visitors to the islands are whisked away to their retreat.There are a couple of ways to get to your resort, depending on its distance from the airport. You will most often have the choice between boat transfers and aeroplane transfers, though many prefer the aerial route as they find the views of the Maldives from the air are simply stunning. Beware however, that though you may travel by seaplane, your luggage will still travel by speed boat so you might arrive before it does.
