Looking Back At Our Children's Life Stages

Looking Back At Our Children's Life Stages

As parents, one of the most difficult things we could ever do is to let our children go

. When they are born, they are all too dependent on our care. In fact, without us, they could not survive. And thus begins the journey of our children as we bring them into the world and teach them the things needed for them to survive and eventually go out on their own. What are those moments that help define the stages of our kids:

- The infancy stage. This is when our kids are totally dependent on us. This is also the stage of sleepless nights attending to their cries, feeding them and cuddling them to sleep. Baby formulas and baby food are but their main staple of these kids. We notice so many things in this stage: first smile, first baby words said, first tooth, and first steps. These are the times so memorable to us.

- First years. As they start to walk on their own and begin to speak , we start to teach them to be independent. We teach them to recognize faces, to know of people's names. We practise with them as they learn how to walk, learn how to put on their clothes. We potty train them and encourage them to play with their building block toys. They learn to count, even if jus rote memorization.

- Pre teens. They go to school and learn the basics: reading, writing, arithmetic. They also learn how to socially interact and mingle, and learn to spend time away from the home. They are able to dress themselves up, go to the bathroom, and strike up a simple conversation. Sometimes, we let them learn sports and hobbies. We watch them when they play games or have recitals. We soon realize that they are growing up faster then we would want to. We wish that time would stop for a bit but they are growing up.Looking Back At Our Children's Life Stages

- The teen years. Hormones shoot in and for a time, they don't understand us and we don't understand them. There may be a disconnection between parents and children but we give them enough room and latitude in trying to find their own path. They want to be independent and learn to drive the cars. They go and find cheap insurance for young drivers and ask us to pay for it. We don't mind for as long as they follow the rules. An infraction of it means sanction, which they understand and always try to find a way to get around it.

- The college years. This is when they leave home and come over when it is convenient for them or when they need to have their laundry done. We help pay for their college and hope that they learn something there and not party all the time. They are young adults and need to be set free. We help them do that.
