London Bridge - A Heritage As Solid As The Stones That Built It

Described as a "world in one city", London looms up like a veritable giant in the modern era

. Although a mix and tumble of many different cultures ranging from eastern to western, this great city still manages to remain quintessentially British. Home to some of the most famous landmarks and monuments such as the London Bridge, River Thames and Westminster, this city still has the confidence and the stature to that is akin to the proud lineage that ruled its plains years ago.

Officially stated to have been constructed between the years 1824 -1831 by John Rennie, the London Bridge was the oldest and only bridge that spanned over the river Thames till the year 1750. Yet still, there are reports stating that the history of this Bridge dates back further to the year 1209, where a priest named Peter of Colechurch designed and constructed a stone bridge that was one of a kind. Held up by 20 pointed arches, it's said that it resembled more "like the architecture on the edge of a fabled city than a bridge." Damaged, replaced and reconstructed over countless times, the old bridge gave way to a new one in the year 1831.

Finally in 1968, this historical giant was completely dismantled and bought over by Lake Havasu City, Arizona. The original London Bridge now stands proud over the waters of the Colorado River, Arizona while a new bridge made of concrete was constructed in England in 1973 to replace the one removed. Still not to be relieved of strife, the natural bridge collapsed yet again in the year 1990. It's now known as the "London Arch" and is touted as an "amazing natural rock formation". This is a site that is an absolute must visit when journeying the Port Campbell National Park.
