Loading A Pickup Truck Properly For Safer Travel

Loading a pickup truck properly is really the best way to be sure of a safer traveling experience

. Perhaps you have seen trucks with loads hanging all to one side, the weight distributed badly, or piled too high - the list just goes on and on.

Some people give it no thought, or so it seems. Yet, it's your safety, and perhaps the safety of your family too, that's at stake. The safety of other people is also at stake, for if you overturn your truck on the highway, because of a load where the weight is hanging all to one side, for example, you can be sure that other people will be affected.

The potential problems you face include things getting wet and slippery, heavy object shifting from one side to another on corners, light objects getting blown out of the truck bed, to possible become a hazard for others.

To help prevent things slipping around, fit your truck bed with a non-skid liner. This is simply a rubberized mat, effectively, that will fit the bed and stop things sliding around. The liner will also help to prevent damage to the bed itself, so it's a good investment from several angles.Loading A Pickup Truck Properly For Safer Travel

If you regularly carry high standing loads, consider fitting side rails. These are a bit like a fence that goes around the top edge of the sides, and will help to keep everything inside the bed. You will have to lash the load down securely, but side rails can definitely help if things should get loose, for any reason.

Fit tie downs into the stake pockets on the sides of the bed. Stake pockets are a throwback to an earlier time when actual wooden stakes were inserted in a large square hole to aid the carrying of hay, for example, by farmers. These days they are a convenient place to fasten a tie down, a small eyelet that can take a rope or strap to secure a load.

Be sure to get the best tie downs. There are two basic types: rigid tie downs and retractable tie downs. The rigid type are what they appear to be, a tie down that always looks the same. The retractable type have an eyelet that retracts when not in use. They can be gravity lowered into the stake pocket, or spring loaded to lower into the stake pocket.

Stow the load in the bed of your truck with consideration to weight. Place the heaviest objects, or the bulk of the weight, over the axles, if possible. Keep the weight even side to side, and back to front. Lash down the load with good stout ropes, or straps, using the tie downs. If you have a long journey, stop and check your load every hour. It pays to stay safe.
