One of the hardest things about learning a new language is learning the practical, everyday things that you'll encounter when moving among its speakers. Just about every day, we all have to make change, explain something in numerical terms or do some basic math. While people do tend to be oriented toward math or language where their learning abilities are concerned, the two are far more related than most people think. Language is a skill that depends upon the ability to abstract ideas and thoughts into words. Math is the same, except that it centers on numbers.
You can help yourself to learn French fast where numbers are concerned by knocking down the mental barriers that we tend to erect between math and language skills. To speak a language fluently, you have to understand how to communicate complex ideas in it, not just recite phrases. One way to do this is to add basic math problems to your learning materials. This is different than just remembering the numbers and then remembering how to say "times", "minus", "plus" and so forth in the language. Real life situations tend to cement these ideas in the minds of new speakers.
One way to make this process easier is to integrate stories into the study. Instead of saying, "How much is 2 minus 1", you can use story materials to make the process more interesting. Most people find story problems to be very tedious, but they can be fun in other languages. For example, "Benoit took a cab ride that cost ten francs. The driver expects a 7 percent tip. How much does is cost Benoit to give a 10 percent tip and impress the driver?" Spoken in the target language, this provides a challenge that allows students to listen and learn French numbers in real life situations.
Some learning materials are designed around storytelling exercises. These provide a good way to make your own problems up or, if you're studying with a friend or studying French in a classroom environment, to make up problems for the class. By incorporating the character's names and the language you've learned from the story, you and those studying with you are challenged to sort out the words, figure out what's being asked and then to work the problem out. This is very much like many of the real life situations you'll encounter if you travel!
