Life at Chennai City by:Francis Regan

Life at Chennai city is very cool and pleasant maybe because I had been in this place from my childhood

. Chennai, formerly known as Madras has evolved in many ways during the past ten years. Well it is the only Metropolitan City in South India and people call it as Singara Chennai.

Over the decades, Chennai has continued its pride as the capital of Tamil Nadu - the rich heritage from Dravidian culture, a growing metropolitan city that has many industries and MNCs, and a city that boasts of traditional agraharams standing next to many high rise apartments.

Chennai city has two faces and each of them are special in their own way- On the one hand you can still savor sipping hot filter coffee and listen to the sweet melodious music of the Suprabhatam while on the other you can visit the coolest pubs and multiplexes

Many traditional activities happen in Chennai at a daily basis. At the break of the first light, women of the house clean their courtyards and decorate with Kolams (patterns on the floor) made with rice powder. The idea behind the rice powder is that they want to start their day by doing a good deed by feeding the ants and the insects early in the morning. Life at Chennai City by:Francis Regan

Away from the scampering city life is a quaint pond enclosed by a walkway which serves as the walker's paradise. This place in Pammal is a best place for the joggers and walkers every morning and evening. What is better than taking a walk in the natural surroundings?

Another major attraction is the Marina beach. People visiting Chennai make a point to visit the beach. The beach is popular for its shops and food stalls. Many road side vendors have their stalls near the beaches to make profit. The place is very much lively and at times several shows including religious and political meetings have taken place at the beach. The beach has several memorials and statues of great people like Mahatma Gandhi etc; the place makes a great hangout for people of all ages. The sea is rough and waves are strong. There are fishermen colonies present at both ends of the beach.

The Chennai Corporation took up the Marina Renovation Project in 2008 which aims at improving landscaping, seating arrangements, walkways and lighting along the promenade. The work is nearly getting over. The overall cost of renovating the beach was of 259.2 million Indian Rupees. The project was taken up especially to improve the overall hygienic environment in the beach.

There are several other worst scenarios which make consumers suffer in the Chennai City. Let me narrate few incidents which make consumers stranded and helpless.

I still remember the peak water problems we had in Chennai during the year 2005-2007. The time was critical and people had to run to the nearby water tanks to get a pot of water. Still the problem pertains in many parts of the city. Well, you are lucky if you are staying in an apartment for you would not get to know of the water challenges posed by the city. The tanker comes and fills up the community tank. My heart goes out for the people staying in independent houses. For them the only option is to carry water from the water tanker to respective houses. The water quality is also not very good and consumers are struggling to merely survive in the city. They are denied of their consumer rights and their complaints as a consumer have no impulse in the government.

However, there is another sad plight which has to be definitely mentioned. The city does not have a proper disposal area for the garbage. Every day nearly 3000 tons of garbage is being generated by Chennai. All the garbage are collected and dumped in the Perungudi dump yard and Kodungaiyur dump yard in north Chennai. It is really sad to see the children work as rag-pickers in the dump. There are more than 30 children found in the the garbage yards as they salvage plastic and other materials for resale. Most of the children have never been to school. A day's hard labour fetches each of them hardly ten to twenty rupees. Life at Chennai City by:Francis Regan

Another thing is people in Chennai drive / ride their vehicles as if they own the road. Right in the middle of the street and no amount of honking helps. Also you have got to learn their style of driving if you plan to survive in the city.

Chennai is definitely a great place to live provided if you enjoy your stay. Learn, Live and Adapt Chennai!!
