Lichen planus and various treatments available


Lichen planus is an allergic reaction that is activated by the immune system of the body. These allergic reactions are triggered due the stress whether it's emotional or physical. Researchers believe that it happens when immune system turns weak and becomes prone to the disease. Though this disease is neither infectious nor communicable but it can persist for longer duration and it may recur after sometime. Lichen planus is one of the main causes of hair loss. Apart from that it causes itchy, swollen rash on the skin or in the mouth.

Papular lichen planus and Aactinis lichen planus are the most common types of Lichen Planus. In the former, papules on the skin develop as shiny smooth areas that can expand to form plaques ranging in color from pink, violet or brown. Whereas, the Aactinis lichen planus occurs to the people exposed to the chemicals living in tropical areas.When the Lichen planus affects the scalp, the situation in medical terms is referred to as Lichen Planopilaris. It causes permanent scars that block the areas around hair follicles. Once the hair follicles get blocked it results in hair fall. When it affects mouth, the patient may suffer from severe to mild pain. The lesions occur on the sides of the tongue or inside of the cheek. It at times can be located at gums .The area around the mouth that is affected increases in size. Similarly the legions on the skin are located on the inner wrists, legs, torso or genitals.

When it comes to the treatment, it varies from person to person and it also depends on the complexity and the location of the condition. The treatment options available are topical therapy, oral therapy and photo therapy or light therapy. In topical treatment the affected area is treated with corticosteroids like clobetasol, halobetasol, betamethasone, and diflorasone. This treatment is used for almost three weeks and it has to be applied twice in a day. And as far as the oral therapy is concerned, usually dermatologists prescribe prednisone tablets (30-60mg) taken orally twice a day for 6 weeks. Acitretin can be also used in place of prednisone tablets.

Photo therapy doesn't involve any kind of drug. Photo therapy is used to treat the affected area by giving Psoralen plus ultraviolet (PUVA) which is to be managed three times a week for eight weeks. The use of histamines is very beneficial in case of hair loss. You can also use the oral followed by topical steroid liquids. The oral medicines Palquenil and Accutane as well as ointments or creams with Vitamin A formulation have proven quite beneficial for the patients.

Patients suffering from Lichen planus should take proper medication as described by dermatologist. This disease takes bit of time to heal and it varies from person to person, therefore patient should not panic at all. In case the drugs show any kind of reaction, stop immediately and consult your doctor. If there is any kind of discolouration of legions, it should be shown immediately to the doctor.
