Lexington Cosmetic Dentist Do Canker Sores Give Signs

Open sores that appear in the mouth are called canker sores. When you get this sores they will definitely appear on the inside of the cheeks, lips, soft palate and on your tongue. These are very common occurrences which can appear at any age. They are also called aphthous ulcers. Canker sores are different from fever blisters, which usually are on the outside of your lips or the corners of your mouth.

As much as canker sores can run in the family they are not contagious at all. The causes of canker sores are not exactly known by doctors.Mouth injuries, stress, poor nutrition, food allergies and menstrual periods are some of the things that may increase your chances of getting a canker sore. Canker sores have been associated with AIDs virus infection.

Before the actual sore appear, your mouth might tingle and burn and soon a red bump rises. It will burst after a day leaving a yellowish wound which has a red border. Being up to an inch across or a bit smaller, it can be quite painful. Fever, discomfort and feeling sluggish can some times be felt by someone who is having canker sores.

A doctor's advice should be sort if you have,

Abnormal large sores.

When you get recurring ulcers and especially just before the old ones heal.

When sores persist for three weeks and more.

When sores have gone beyond the mouth and have extended to the lips.

Pain that is not controllable with self remedies.

Extreme difficulty eating or drinking.

Body temperature rises because of the sores.

The good news is that canker sores are not contagious like some other mouth sores, such as cold sores. So you can't spread canker sores by sharing food or kissing someone.Cold sores, however, are caused by the herpes simplex virus, which can pass from person to person. When you get a sore and cannot differentiate whether it is a cold or canker sore, the location will determine. Outside the mouth around the chin, lips or nostrils is where the cold sores appear while the canker sores affect the inside of the mouth only.

Normally, the pain should disappear after several days and healing takes place within a week to 3 weeks making it unnecessary to seek treatment.

Although there is no cure for canker sores and they often recur, you may be able to reduce their frequency by,

1. Avoiding foods that irritate your mouth - including acidic or spicy foods.

2. Avoiding irritation from gum chewing.

3. Brushing with a soft-bristled brush after meals and flossing daily, this will keep your mouth free of foods that might trigger a sore.

If sores are large, painful, or persistent, your dentist may prescribe an antimicrobial mouth rinse, a corticosteroid ointment, or a prescription solution to reduce the pain and irritation.

Aphthous ulcers is commonly caused by dental braces. Avoid this by having your appliance covered with wax to prevent mucosa abrasion. Trauma of any kind, be it physical or chemical should be avoided at all cost though it might not seem practical since most trauma is accidental.
