Learning another language can be fun, stimulating and interesting

. There are many ways to go about learning a new language. You could listen to CDs, attend classes with other students to practice with and take online courses. If you have the means, traveling to the country where the language is spoken and doing the immersion process along with the cultural exposure would be wonderful. In order to learn greek, you must have discipline and put the effort forth to master it.

One of the oldest languages in the world, Greek was the language chosen by Aristotle, it was the language used in The New Testament of the Christian Bible and ancient Greek literature including such important works like the Iliad and Odyssey. With its roots in the Indo-European family of languages, Greek is native to the southern Balkans and has over 34 centuries of documented history.

Since the 3rd millennium B.C., Greek has been spoken on the Balkan Peninsula. Clay tablets were discovered on Crete that date back to 1400 B.C. with Ancient Greek writings making it one of the oldest recorded living languages in the world. The Greeks use the Phoenician alphabet to this day with very little alterations. English derives many of its words from the Greek language such as photography, biomechanics, mathematics, and cinematography.

Over 13 million people speak Greek in Greece and Cyprus. There are Greek-speaking areas in other countries of the world such as Armenia, Lebanon, Israel, Ukraine, Russia, Egypt and southern Italy. Nearly everyone in Greece speaks Greek with the exception of Cyprus where Turkish is the official language.

Learning a new language requires memorization and using mnemonics can help you. This method links to everyday items in your world like a room or a house. You connect images with words in order to memorize them. Aside from utilizing a grammar lessons, another fun method to try is to watch old Greek movies with subtitles.

Another technique that is used to learn language is to study the most common 100 words in the language giving you about half of what you need to know to converse. Another technique used is image coding. With this style of learning you attach words to things and visualize what the word is, for instance you would learn the word green and associate it with a park.

If you choose to work on your own, a foreign language software program can emulate being in Greece and conversing with natives. You can interact, do activities and learn visualization and listening techniques. Another method to try is labeling common objects around the house. In no time at all you will be using the Greek word for table instead of your native language. Reading books in Greek will help you with syntax. Start with children's books and work you way up to epic novels.
