Learn About History Of Rey When You Travel To Iran

History of Rey dates back to 6000 BC when the city made a small beginning as a settlement in the Central Plateau Culture

. It became the capital of the Medes and was named Rhaga. Classical Roman geography refers to this place as Rhagae.

You can also find this place mentioned in the pre-Median times. Studies point to the town being built by the ancient mythological monarchs whereas there are also stories about this city being the mainstay of a Zoroastrian leader.

Important Structures

History of Rey tells you about many historical monuments and structures built in this city which includes the Gabri castle which is about 3000 years old, Cheshmeh Ali mound dating back to 5000 years back, Bibi Shahr Banoo tomb which has a 1000-year history, Shah Abbasi caravansary, Shah Abdol Azim shrine, Toghrol tower, Rey bazaar, Anyanaj tower and paintings of monarchs on Ashkan mountain. The downfall of the town began after the Mongols invaded the region. With the nearby Tehran flourishing steadily, the importance of this place has gone through a diminishing path.

Religious Place

Shah Abdol Azim shrine is dedicated to a famous Shia saint. The Toghrol tower or the Borj e Toghrol dates back to the 12th century. The shrine built in honor of Princess Shahr Banu who was the eldest daughter of the last Sassanian ruler is a place to visit when you travel to Iran.

You will also find a mountain nearby bearing her name. Some accounts describe the shrine as a dedication to Anahita, the goddess of fertility and water. It was possibly renamed later to save it from Arab invaders' devastating attack.

Interesting Painting

When you read the history of Rey, you will further learn how Fath Ali Shah Qajar ordered a slide to be erected on the nearby Ashkan mountains. The rocks of this mountain previously carried images of the Sassanid kings. He had these images erased and his own portrait painted instead. You should take a look at this when you travel to Iran.
