Leaders in Alopecia Areata Treatment

By Dr Raj Sidhu

Alopecia Areata is a hair loss condition that typically occurs quite rapidly and causes patches of baldness to appear on the scalp. We most commonly find young children and teenagers suffering from Alopecia Areata; however, we have also treated numerous cases affecting adult individuals.

There are various forms of Alopecia Areata, with the most common form being one or more patches of hair loss on the scalp or general thinning of hair throughout the crown. Symptoms of Alopecia Areata can even be experienced with loss of facial hair in the case of males, appearing as patches of hair loss on the beard or moustache.

Occasionally, we receive conditions referred to as Alopecia Totalis, where complete hair loss occurs over the entire scalp. Even less frequently, a condition known as Alopecia Universalis may arise which results in hair loss throughout the whole body.

The Causes of Alopecia Areata

The true cause of Alopecia Areata is still unknown, though evidence suggests that it is caused by an abnormality within the immune system which causes a misdirected auto-immune response to occur. What this means is that the body's own immune system becomes self-destructive and consequently begins to attack certain tissues of the body.

In this case, the hair follicles come under attack, thus causing the disruption of the normal hair formation and hair loss occurs. Scientific biopsies of samples of affected scalp tissue show the presence of white blood cells in the hair follicles. These cells are not normally present in this area, and therefore suggests the involvement of an immune response.

At SRS Hair Loss Treatment, we have been treating various hair loss signs and symptoms for over 25 years. We find that when it comes to Alopecia Areata, there typically isn't just ONE cause for the loss of hair, but instead there is more a culmination of different stresses on the immune system that triggers it's malfunction and subsequent hair loss.

We find that Alopecia Areata can be triggered due to a combination of the following causes:

Stress/Trauma

Auto-Immune diseases

Chemical poisoning

Hereditary factors

Stress/Trauma

It is common for patients to trace the first signs of their Alopecia Areata back to a particularly stressful event in their lives, after which it tends to develop further over time as more stressful events arise.

In one situation, we had a lady who could pin-point the start of her Alopecia Areata to literally 3 or 4 days after the death of her husband.

Of course nearly everybody is affected by stress or traumatic events at certain times in life, but it appears that for sufferers of Alopecia Areata, their immune system is more prone to triggering the production of antibodies. This makes them more vulnerable to stress than the general population.

Auto-Immune Diseases

Alopecia Areata can affect people of all races, ages and state of health therefore there doesn't seem to be any exemptions on who the condition affects.

But in saying so, many of our cases show that people affected by Alopecia Areata are often also affected by other auto-immune conditions such as allergic disorders, thyroid problems or arthritis.

Such immune disorders can contribute to the overall vulnerability of an individual's immune system, and therefore any further stresses the body may develop into the visible signs of hair loss.

Chemical Poisoning

There appears to be a correlation between the development of Alopecia Areata and exposure to harmful chemicals or unintended chemical poisoning. An example of this would include an individual's exposure to chemically-sprayed farmland or produce harvested from that land.

Extended exposure to these may have an impact on the overall vulnerability of a person's immune system, which may make them more susceptible to developing Alopecia Areata at some stage in their life.

When treating clients with Alopecia Areata, we make sure to collect all relevant information regarding their home and work environment to determine whether these could harbor any possible sources of contamination that's contributing to their condition.

Hereditary Factors

In some cases, we may find that the client has one or more family members that have also suffered from patchy hair loss in the past.

For example, our lastest client with Alopecia Areata was a young girl, where at the same time her father was also suffered from patchy hair loss, though in the father's case it was patches of hair loss on both his head and beard.

With such cases being relatively common, it appears that a genetic inclination is a major contributing factor towards a person's development of Alopecia Areata.
