Laos, known as the jewel of Indochina, is a tropical country in Southeast Asia
. It is bordered on all sides by other countries, Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. The area is a popular destination for many vacationers as the tropical environment and the many streams and rivers that flow into the Mekong River creates a tropical resort style destination in many areas of Laos where tourism is tops as far as a viable industry in the area, with many outdoor adventure and water activities to choose from.The country is covered on over three quarters of its surface by mountains and plateaus and so hiking and climbing are popular activities in the area. Laos also has many untouched areas in the rainforests, making it an ideal place for those who like to go exploring and discover new places.
While visiting Laos, make sure you take a tour on the Mekong River. There are many to choose from, whether you would like to take a day river tour or a 13-day cruise around the Golden Triangle, there is a boat trip available to you. The many different styles of boats and amenities also offer a variety of choices for visitors to the region.
The Mekong River also provides opportunities to try many different water activities, including kayaking and white water rafting through beautiful areas with amazing waterfalls. Adventurous outdoor lovers can have quite an exotic trip that offers a look back in time in some of the fairly primitive areas in the densest regions of the rainforest in Laos. Cycling, hiking, mountain climbing are all popular activities in the mountainous regions. My friends and I had a great adventure in Laos during our holiday from Sao Miguel, Portugal.
Laos is home to many species of animals only found in this area. There are the Mekong giant catfish, the largest freshwater fish in the world. The largest example of a Mekong giant catfish was 9 feet long and weighed 646 pounds. There are also Asian elephants, Macaques, and Douc monkeys. The impressive thing for many who come to Laos is an ability to photograph these animals in their natural habitat. There are entire areas that seem untouched. Farming makes up 80 percent of the employment in the region, so maintaining the land is a priority for the people.
The people of Laos are another of the strong draws for many visitors to the country. The culture promotes respect for others and places a high regard on courtesy, so as long as you are respectful and courteous, you should find the people of Laos delightful as you journey through their country. The people are incredibly friendly and the tourism minister has an outline of the tourism laws of this nation as promoted by the central government. Also in the country of Laos, particularly in areas where tourism is popular, many people speak not only the official language of Lao, but also Vietnamese, French and English.
