Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka State in India

One of the Bangalores oldest royal gardens has been transformed into a resourceful botanical garden. This garden known as Lal Bagh was initiated in 1760 to serve as the private garden for Hyder Ali, then ruler of Mysore in Karnataka State. Following the Mughal garden styles Lal Bagh was completed later by Hyder Alis son Tipu Sultan. The Lal Bagh Botanical Garden draws throngs of visitors from students to researchers to tourists regularly.
Initially Lal Bagh Botanical Garden sprawled across a land of 40 acres and eventually was expanded up to 240 acres. A stone wall surrounds the territory which is complemented with open spaces and shades connected by well laid roads and paths. Take a tour around Lal Bagh and observe over 1000 species of exotic and native plants encompassing over 600 genera. Visitors will not only get an opportunity to see the variety of ornamental plants but will also get to see some rare species of flora here.
Lal Bagh is under the care of the Directorate of Horticulture which is also based within the same premises. It not only acts as a botanical garden but also conducts various projects such as educational programs and conservation plans for plants. The garden also serves as a genetic resource centre where you can learn a lot about a plants scientific and technical information.
Among its major highlights is the not to be missed Glass House with a striking appearance. It was built to resemble the Crystal Palace in London but the design has been slightly changed later. This stunning Glass House at Lal Bagh hosts horticultural shows coinciding with special days including the Republic Day of India that falls on 26th of January.
A stroll in Lal Bagh will take you through a paradise teeming with vibrant flowerbeds, serene lotus ponds, lush lawns and refreshing fountains. You will also stumble upon a 3000 million year old rock formation besides an enthralling floral clock tended by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The garden also nestles some of the perennial trees claiming to be more than 100 years old.
