Koala Bear Stuffed Animal Toys

Is there anything quite as adorable as a koala

? A koala bear stuffed animal, of course, is just as endearing as the real thing. Simply because of their cuddly looks, koala bear stuffed animals are an extremely popular plush toy. Although, the argument could be made that since we rarely, if ever, get to see live koalas unless travelling to Australia, the best possible substitute is a koala bear stuffed animal.

As much as our inclination is to call koalas 'bears,' they are in fact, not related to bears at all. They are marsupials which means they are mammals that carry their young called joeys - in a pouch. Joeys are no bigger than a jelly bean, have no hair, and are blind when born, and they crawl inside their mother's pouch after birth where they remain for up to six months, feeding on her milk so as to continually grow. After that, the joey rides on its mother back or belly until it reaches one year of age.

Koalas are quite difficult to keep in non Australian zoos as they are very finicky eaters. They only dine on certain types of eucalyptus leaves and prefer the tips to be fresh. Their exclusive diet of eucalyptus leaves (of which they consume two and a half pounds per day), provides no nutritional value whatsoever, though the leaves do give them moisture for them to drink instead of water. With the lack of nutrients in their diet, koalas need to conserve energy as much as possible, so they sleep up to 18 hours per day. Koalas live and sleep in eucalyptus trees found in eastern Australia and rarely come to the ground except to move to another tree.

With their habitats shrinking, they have to travel further and further to find new homes which ultimately leaves them open to often being struck by cars. Unfortunately, koalas are born with underdeveloped adrenalin glands which means their flight or fight responses are quite lacking. Instead of running from danger like cars and predators, they tend to go into a state of shock leaving the animal totally unequipped to deal with the hazards of modern day which has resulted in many of their deaths.

When you purchase a koala bear stuffed animal, you inadvertantly help to raise awareness of their plight that is, that their habitats are rapidly disappearing. In addition, some 4000 koalas are rescued every year because of car accidents, dog attacks, and infections, thus all of the Australian organizations that care for these animals, need all the help they can get even if it only means getting the word out. So, the next time you're in the market for a plush toy, why not choose a koala bear stuffed animal instead of a traditional teddy bear? They are just as soft and equally as snuggable as any teddy bear.
