Know the Forms of Payment That Are Accepted Before You Make a Money Transfer to Armenia

Find out whether you should make a money transfer to Armenia via a prepaid debit card, or if you should just bring cash or traveler's checks.

The currency in this country is the Armenian dram, so you should get your American dollars switched to this legal tender when you arrive. You can usually do so at airports or major hotels for a small fee. It is often best to get this done as soon as possible, whether or not you plan to use cash a lot during your stay. This is because most shops accept cash, whereas not every store takes checks or plastic, just like in the United States. It is best to be prepared with cash so that you do not have to make a sudden money transfer to Armenia through your bank if you find that credit cards and traveler's checks are not taken.

Traveler's checks are accepted in this country, but not widely. This means you can bring them, but do not rely on them as your only form of payment. Also, it costs about $10 USD to exchange them, but this fee has to be paid in drams, not dollars. This means that you need to exchange cash first, and then change your traveler's checks when you can, such as at the airport in Yerevan.

If you like to use cards in the U.S., you can do the same in this country, but you cannot always depend on it as your sole form of payment. You can make a money transfer to Armenia to a prepaid debit card by calling or going online and paying a $5 USD fee. You can use the card at some stores in Yerevan, but most smaller cities do not take cards, so bring cash. You can also remove cash from an ATM, which are scattered throughout major cities like Yerevan. If you are venturing outside such areas, be sure to bring cash since you might not find many ATMs or stores that take plastic.

If you feel safe with a credit or debit card at home, you might like traveling with a prepaid debit card since most people find it safe and convenient. You can of course bring cash to exchange as well, and even traveler's checks. You can use all three in Armenia, but they are not all accepted everywhere. The trick is to take several forms of payment so that you are always prepared.
