Know about Cologne and 4 Best Tourist Attractions of Cologne

Cologne is located in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, along the Rhine River between Dusseldorf and Bonn. Founded by the Romans 2000 years ago, Cologne is one of Germany's oldest cities. Cologne's wealth of tourist attractions makes it a popular stop-off for visitors to Germany. The city's premier tourist attractions are listed below:

1. The Cologne Cathedral (Dom):

The Cologne Cathedral is one of the most frequently visited tourist attractions in Germany. It took over 600 years to build and is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is a fine reflection of the Gothic architecture which is conveniently located right next to the train station. The two mighty spires of the Cologne Cathedral are visible from a long distance and dominate the city's skyline. It is still regarded as the biggest Gothic building of the world.

2. Roman-Germanic Museum (Romisch-Germanisches Museum):

The Roman-Germanic Museum is an important archaeological museum in Cologne as it houses an impressive collection of classical art, including the famous Dionysus mosaic and the tomb of Publicus. The museum protects the original place of a Roman town villa, of which the large 230 foot Dionysus Mosaic remains in its original place in the basement now. An unusual feature is the collection of Roman glassware. In this respect the museum is an archaeological site.

3. The Phantasialand:

The Phantasialand amusement park in south of Cologne is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with a wide variety of attractions: a cableway, a white water run, a Viking boat trip, a Casa Magnetica in which the law of gravity is apparently suspended, a monorail, Chinatown, a tiger enclosure, a dolphin show and a computer-controlled electronic show. The Galaxy outer space ride is the newest attraction in the park.

4. Cologne Zoo and Aquarium (Zoo Koln):

Cologne Zoo is the perfect family attraction which boasts an enormous collection of animals, including one of the biggest elephant parks in the whole of Europe. Other top attractions include the monkey island, giraffes, hippos, an indoor rainforest area, a modern owl house and an outstanding group of aquariums, where many brightly colored marine fish reside, amongst beautifully landscaped coral reefs.
