, washing loads of clothes for you every single day. To most of us the history of washing machines is of little importance when we buy washing machines, but did you know you can actually use the machine better if you knew how it began its journey!

It has been found that we take better care and handle washing machines better when we form an emotional connection with machines, so we thought what better than to narrate you the story of birth of the washing machine.

The Rising Need

By the beginning of 1800s, there was a rising need for automating common things because modern man was having his hands full of modern things to do, and he was beginning to wear more clothes than he had done in the past few decades. Now, washing clothes was mostly a feminine chore with a few exception here and there. Until now, women folk washed clothes manually and taking care of huge washing loads was proving more than comfortable for them, so their men thought of a better alternative, so he made a few crude specimens that worked on the same principles that washermen and women were using all these years, but now it was semi-automatic.

Primitive Washing Machines

These first models had to be operated entirely by hand by rotating a lever fitted to the sides of the machine or press on a foot operated pedal which essentially did the same thing as the hand lever. We bet you will not buy washing machines that need manual efforts today when you have all modern machines and electronics, would you?

By 1900s, Hurley Washing Machine and the Automatic Electric Washer company started producing washing machines that were more or less similar to what we see when we buy washing machines. These had a wringer inside a metal or wooden tub and an electric current would wring the clothes in the tub until everything was clean and fine!

Modern, Faster, Efficient Washing Machines

We buy washing machines because they are faster, modern and much more efficient than wringing and washing clothes manually. Agreed that we have to spend some on power and water, but if the overall benefits are taken into account, we will find washing machines much better than any other alternative. So, how did they improved the unit and made it so affordable?

The latest generation of washing machines have what we know as the agitator at the center of the unit. It is driven by the motor which sits at the base of the unit. Besides being connected with the agitator, the motor also spins the spinning tub (the cylindrical tube that has holes in it).

When an electric current is passed into the motor it rotates the agitator, which in turn rotates, wrings and twists the wash load in the washing machine. With the press of another button on the machine, you activate the spinning tube, which now spins along with the agitator and draws the water from the tube and sends it out through a drain pipe!

Water is becoming precious these days and governments around the world are trying their best to limit the usage of water in every single household. We are also worried about washing machine prices. Would you not buy washing machines that did not require water to clean clothes?

The Japanese have thought of a way which does not use water at all! All washing machines have computer chips in them, but these modern machines have some very advanced computer chips in them which senses the amount of dirt in clothes and makes enough bubbles to clean it. The greatest advantage of bubbles is that there is more air than water in bubbles, which makes it easier to dry the clothes after washing!
