I'm very fond of this device after a few day's worth of use. I had to wait a couple weeks for it to arrive, but it came to my doorstep about 3 days ahead of schedule which was a pleasant surprise.

Onto the device itself, there isn't too much to say aside from what's already been mentioned. It's fairly small, which is an excellent perk, and the ergonomics are pretty seemless after getting a feel for the controls. At first I was turned off by the button placement (my right thumb would always be resting on the 'Back' botton when holding with one hand) but after a while, I'd find myself naturally holding the device with 2 hands, which would in turn shift my right hand lower, and my left hand higher (So basicaly, left thumb on "Left Back" and right thumb on "Right Forward"). Very convenient when holding with 2 hands, and an incredibly minor gripe with just one.

The keyboard is okay. Just okay. The buttons are responsive, but you're not gonna be doing any speed-typing with it. There aren't any number keys, but there are two ways around this. First, you can hit the 'Sym' button to access a menu with numbers, along with other symbols. But the easiest method is to just hold 'Alt' and press QWERTY for 123456, etc. There's also a small "Enter" key (specified by a 90 degree curved arrow) which I mistakenly took for a Backspace key. This boggled my mind, because the Square button in between the directional-pad functions almost exactly the same as the Enter key- and the 'Del' key acts as a Backspace. Now where I come from, Backspace clears the letters behind the cursor, and Del clears the letters in front of the cursor. Not with the Kindle Keyboard. 'Del' functions as a traditional Backspace would. I guess it's nitpicking, but I would've really preferred the Enter button to be a Backspace button, and the Delete key to function as a Delete key should.

The screen isn't mind blowing, but it certainly stands on its own two feet. Crisp, bold and most importantly, readable. The greyscale detail looks great with pictures, though I don't care for the non-customizable screensavers that appear on the display when it's sleeping/off. Amazon would do good to allow its customers to personalize their devices! Refresh rate, if I were to guess, is roughly half second. I'd imagine it takes me longer to turn the page of an actual book. The screen goes black for a short period when turning pages, however I wouldn't consider this a distraction due to the briefness.

I'm also pleased with the font customization. Though there are only 3 fonts to choose from, they present themselves well on the e-ink display and can be resized accordingly. I'm personally a fan of the sans-serif font set to the smallest size with medium line spacing. The fact that the smallest fonts appear so vividly on the display speaks higher than I can express. I hate to say it, but you have to see it to believe it.

Text-to-Speech isn't worth the effort, in my opinion. The voices are generic, robotic, lifeless and boring. They either read too fast, or too slow. I suppose I could see myself listening to a couple pages with it as I change rooms or something, but I doubt it.

I'm not going to dive into every little detail of the newest Kindle, so I'll wrap it up with 2 more things: The Store and the Browser.

The Kindle Store works as you'd expect. From the Home screen, just press the Menu button and the Store is the first object highlighted. Browse books, make your selection and it downloads to your device. Another great perk is loading books to your Kindle from Amazon.com. Before my Kindle even arrived, I had already loaded 10 free books onto my account. They showed up in my library immediately after powering on my device for the first time via 3G. (Amazon is kind enough to link the device to your account before it ships)

The browser is much better than I expected, albeit greyscale. It's functional, in a primitive sort of way. You navigate a cursor with the Directional Pad, and it conveniently places itself over hyperlinks. Text based blogs, Google Searches and Wikipedia all look great on it, considering. Even the occasional news site like CNN or WSJ will render well. The screen only partially refreshes as you scroll through pages, so the occasional e-ink artifact gets left behind, kind of like a whispy shadow (I only notice this when browsing the internet, never while reading an e-book). Javascript intensive pages (such as Google Maps/Transit) take their time loading (and I mean a long time) whether you're on 3G or WiFi. I would suppose this is because they're more processor intensive, though I admit I haven't fiddled with any mobile versions of either site yet. All in all, I can see myself enjoying the browser casually if I'm stuck in a waiting room, or for a quick Wikipedia fix.

If you're not reading an e-book, Amazon's 3rd Generation Kindle has a charming mediocrity that falls a little flat in comparison to more full featured devices. However, it obtains and presents e-books superbly, which is its primary function to begin with. In terms of dedicated e-readers, it's in a league of its own, which makes those charming side features icing on the cake. Assuming my Kindle doesn't implode on itself, I'm sure I'll be incredibly satisied with my purchase for years to come, as it has already reignited my spark for reading literature.
