Kids Pottery Wheel: How Working With Pottery Helps Your Child Learn To Concentrate
Throughout human history, great advances in science and the arts have come about through the aid of intense concentration
. Einstein's Theory of Relativity would have been impossible to hone without hours and hours of daydreaming and focus on his subject.The skillset of concentration is waning though. Our kids have a hard time thinking for a long time about any one thing. What has taken over is the next clickable flickering image showing up on a computer screen.

Well, as it turns out it does. Our brains are trained to think the way they do, just like Pavlov's dogs were. Whatever we expose our minds to over and over again, will gradually become our new mode of thinking. That is the problem with the Internet and its training of our brains and our children's brain not to concentrate, but instead to quickly move on to the next "relevant" thing on the screen.
Working with clay has many advantages and improving concentration skills is one of the main ones. With a kids pottery wheel, your child is trained to sit down and focus on the clay and what they are creating for a period of time without interruption. (They can't really leave the task because once the wet clay dries, they are pretty much done and will have to start over again with something new when they come back to it.)
By focusing on the task of creating a new piece of pottery on a kids pottery wheel, the mind is trained in several ways... Creativity improvement - By using creation of pottery as a training device, we're improving the overall creativity that our children are able to demonstrate. That is because of the power of creating something out of clay and the fact that it reinforces in the mind the child's ability to create in general.
Focus on a task for a long period of time - As we've said, the Internet has created a distractibility in our brains and certainly in the minds of children that is spilling over into every area of learning. By having to sit down and work on a piece of wet clay that can very quickly dry, children are training their minds to focus on a task deeply.
Stay with something until it is finished - Keeping with the same distractibility concept, it is a waning skill in our society to be able to stay with the task until it is completed. We are so used to working a little bit on one thing and moving on that it is very difficult anymore for us to stay focused on one thing until it's completely done anymore.
By working with wet clay, we are forced to deal with this concept. If you wait and come back later, the wet clay will be dry and you can no longer do anything with it. This is a great value lesson for children who need to stay focused on something until a task is completed.
