Kids Pottery Wheel: 3 Problems

This will probably come as no shock to you, but kids pottery wheels are no different

than any other toy - there are theoretically some problems even with the use and the mechanics of this simple device. That doesn't mean you should't get one, but you need to be aware of the potential problems and head them off at the pass.

Here are the things that could surface as hassles...

Kids make a big mess - There is really just no way to make pottery from wet clay without making a mess. Wet clay is going to be all over your hands if you are in the process of making pottery, if you are doing it aggressively and correctly as it should be done. However, this is part of the sensory experience that gets encoded, synaptically, into the mind and helps with so many other ancillary activities later. So, the messy part shouldn't really be controlled and definitely not stifled.

Motor fails - While this is theoretically possible, it is unlikely, given the state of electric motor technology. The electric motor is so simple anyway - just wire spinning inside a magnetic sheath. There is just not a lot to go wrong with an electric motor and especially nowadays with such strict quality control in the factories that manufacture the motors.

Also, the manufacturers of the more popular pottery wheels for kids are major players and are not going to purchase subcomponents, like electric motors that fail. That is because when that happens they create a hassle for their customers, number one, followed by a cascade of cost and problems for their customer support operations and subsequently their sales organizations, by purchasing substandard parts that won't work as people expect them to work.

Kids do other things with the pottery wheel than what is intended - Kids, being the inventive little rascals that they are, can come up with some "alternative uses" for most anything. (My nephew once fed a slice of bologna into the disc drive of my brother's computer.) So, it can happen.

In the final analysis, kids pottery wheels are safe and you will not go wrong getting one. They are no different than any other system or mechanical device though and things may crop up that you have to deal with in terms of the functionality of the product. Most all of the major manufacturers of these products do have strong warranties that will cover these issues, so returns or replacements will not be a problem. The main thing to keep in mind though is your goal should be exposure of your children to the concept of making pottery from wet clay and not requiring your child to do things perfectly or by the book.
