Kettuvallam is the traditional houseboat which is primarily used in Kerala, one of the picturesque states of India. Kettuvallam is a local Malyalam word which is the combination of two words -''Kettu'' and '' Vallam''. In Malyalam language Kettu means 'tying' and Vallam means 'country boat'.
These splendid houseboats are still made using the ancient techniques of boat building. These are made by the local carpenters by using materials like - Anhili wood, bamboo poles, bamboo mats, carpets, coconut fibre and handmade coir ropes. 'Hull' which is a series of wooden planks, tied together using coir ropes. These boats are of up to 80 feet in length and width of approx 13 feet in the middle. The boats are covered with thatched roofs over wooden hulls. All the materials used to build these houseboats are completely eco-friendly. Even in some of the houseboats solar system is used to supply electric power.

Earlier houseboats were used as an important means of transport of men, materials like rice and spices and other goods.
