Ken River lodge, a quiet little place in Panna, Madhya Pradesh offers you the best of both worlds. Panna is a Tiger Reserve, it is predominantly an open forest and offers great opportunity to view animals like Tiger, Sloth Bear, Cheetal, Sambhar and Nilgai. Panna is also home to crocodiles and over 300 species of birds. The lodge is a distance of merely 1kilometer from the Panna National Park Gate. The lodge is set in a natural forest which is also home to many animals like wild boars, jungle cats, jackals etc. The huts and cottages are spread out in 50 acres of mixed jungle in undulating terrain giving a jungle experience. And yet the lodge also offers comfort.
When I went there I remember being amazed by the beauty of the place, the jungle experience, and yet one thing that truly stood out was the Machaan, popularly known as the tree house. It was a 3000sq.ft. Machaan shaped like a wooden glass house. The meals are served in this Machaan, a multi-cuisine restaurant. The Machaan overlooks the Ken River and the scene is breath taking. Imagine just sitting there, sipping hot coffee in a winter evening, peacefully gazing at the river and the different shades of blue. The lodge is built with natural materials, so from the tree house to the little bar stools, everything is made of wood.
The lodge has around 6 village style huts and 10 cottage rooms. Both are equipped with good facilities. While both have modern bathrooms, the village hut has a dressing room and sit-out and the cottage has a living room, kitchenette and open deck.
Apart from this one can enjoy the boat safari in the Ken River, with steps leading to the river from the lodge itself. One can spot birds, crocodiles and even snakes. The lodge also has its own 4 x 4 open Gypsys for Jungle Safari. One can even take a stroll around the lodge, a beautiful exotic place with lush green trees. In the evening one can sit around the bonfire under the warm blanket of the starry sky and chat with the locals and the hotel staff who always have some interesting facts or their own experiences to share.
