Keeping Your Family Safe From Fire
Fires can spread at the speed of up to 70 mph. In other words, if you're home sets on fire, you have only minutes before your home is turned to a pile of charred rubble. To avoid this tragic scenario, here is a list of potential fire dangers that could be in your home- and how to get rid of them.
The living room has several areas of concern, the biggest being the fireplace. Sixty-two percent of homes in the United States have one or more fireplaces, making this a major risk factor. To avoid any problems, make sure the fireplace flue damper opens and closes completely, avoid leaving anything flammable at least three feet away, and hire a professional to clean the chimney and inspect the firebox at least once per year. Keep candles and lamps away from curtains or any piece of fabric furniture, test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace batteries every six months. Another big fire starter are space heaters. They aren't meant to be left on for long periods of time and can become dangerous if left unattended so be sure to turn them off when leaving the room.
Every year, there are an average of 100,000 fires that start in the kitchen, many of which cause fatalities and nearly every single one could have easily been avoided by following a few simple tips. If possible, avoid distractions in the kitchen such as a computer, TV or phone while cooking. Keep an ansul fire extinguisher system where it is easily accessed and make sure it doesn't expire. Never leave anything on the stove or in the oven unattended and keep any flammables away from the stove. If you can avoid it, keep kids and pets out of the kitchen while cooking- or at least three feet away from the stove and oven. If a fire does start and seems to be spreading quickly- do not try to put it out on your own. Get out of the house and call the fire department immediately.
Although there is plenty of water in the bathroom, it may surprise you to know that it is yet another room where fires are likely to start. First, use light bulbs with wattage at or below the fixtures recommended level. Never set hot appliances like a curling iron or straightener on flammable items and unplug them when you're done using them. Don't overload outlets and if they start feeling warm, promptly unplug everything and call an electrician. Last but not least, make sure that cords don't ever get pinched by cupboard doors or drawers and avoid leaving matches or candles where children can reach them.
Fires can destroy a home in minutes, but thankfully, with some preventative changes, most of them can be easily avoided.
