Keep Off The Grass: A Guide To Summer Lawn Care

Keep Off The Grass: A Guide To Summer Lawn Care

Humans have been working the land around them for thousands of years

. From growing food crops to landscaping gardens, the knowledge we have today is the culmination of many people's hard work and, of course, trial and error.

Many people who live in the city don't have the first clue about turning a barren landscape into a fertile space where organisms grow. Indeed, most people don't need to know except, of course, those with gardens.

Gardens can be people's own personal paradises a mini Eden in an urban jungle. It requires a little effort and upkeep to make it a desirable place to sit and relax. Gardeners don't come cheap, so it certainly pays to learn a little of the basics of keeping your backyard in shape.

A core part of any garden is the lawn. For it to remain lush and green for all those barbeques you're planning for the summer, it's worth knowing how to keep it in check. Keep Off The Grass: A Guide To Summer Lawn Care

While fertiliser should be used to maintain your lawn, if it's used in the wrong way then things can go horribly wrong. Given that fertiliser contains nitrogen, it can burn your lawn if too much is applied and if a scorching summer is on the cards, the temperatures can increase this risk. To help minimise the chance of this happening, opt for slow-release fertiliser with a lower-than-normal nitrogen level and always follow the directions carefully.

In warm weather, grasses of all varieties need more water than normal - this is one of the most common mistakes in back garden maintenance, because heat causes water to evaporate faster. As a general rule of thumb, you should water the ground until the moisture sinks about six inches into the soil and consider increasing the number of times you water too. Ultimately, don't be afraid of drenching your grass if the weather's hot the grass will be happier soaked than too dry.

A little common sense goes a long way too when looking after your garden grass. With warm weather comes a desire to keep cool and let loose but whilst slip and slides' are great fun for all the family, the massive overspill of water in conjunction with people's footsteps will ruin your lawn. So a cold drink and a trip to the local water park is perhaps the best bet for keeping temperatures down.

So whilst lawn maintenance isn't rocket science, there are a few simple tips worth keeping in mind if you want to keep your grass lush and green. When friends and family start arriving for all those summer barbeques, you'll be glad you made the effort!
