The Kansas City Chiefs are hoping last week's performance was just an aberration. The Denver Broncos wish they had only one poor effort to bounce back from.The Chiefs look to keep sole possession of the AFC West lead on Sunday when they face a slumping Broncos team coming off a bye week and trying to win its first divisional game at Invesco Field under coach Josh McDaniels.Looking to match a season-high three-game winning streak and extend its division lead to 2 1/2 games, Kansas City (5-3) fell 23-20 in overtime at Oakland last Sunday. The Chiefs were whistled for a season-high 12 penalties for 100 yards and committed as many turnovers (two) as they had in the previous five weeks combined.Kansas City, now clinging to a half-game lead over the idle Raiders, has a league-low six turnovers."It's difficult to take when you make the mistakes that we did today and lose," quarterback Matt Cassel said after throwing for 216 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
The Chiefs' running game, ranked first in the league with 179.6 yards per game, will try to get back on track after going for a season-worst 104 against the Raiders. Leading rusher Jamaal Charles (719 yards) carried a season-low 10 times for 53 yards while Thomas Jones needed 19 attempts to rush for 32.Chiefs coach Todd Haley blamed "physical issues" for Charles' light workload."I've got to take my hat off to Jamaal. He's shown a lot of toughness and fighting to get back on the field," Haley said. "But there are times he has to come off. And that's as much his decision as anybody else's."Facing the Broncos' 30th-ranked rush defense (154.6 ypg), Charles and Jones could get plenty of opportunities to help Kansas City improve from last Sunday when it had a season-low 3.1 yards per carry.
In the teams' last matchup at Invesco Field, Charles ran for a franchise-record 259 yards and two TDs as the Chiefs snapped an eight-game slide in Denver with a 44-24 victory Jan. 3.That loss to end McDaniels' first season as coach marked the first time the Broncos failed to win a divisional home game.A new season hasn't produced better results for the Broncos (2-6), off to their worst start since 1999 and on the verge of dropping four straight at home for the first time in 20 years.In their last home game, the Broncos tied a franchise record for points allowed in a 59-14 loss to Oakland on Oct. 24. Denver surrendered 508 yards, including 328 on the ground, and fell to 0-4 at home against divisional opponents under McDaniels.The road hasn't been any kinder to the Broncos, who are trying to rebound from a 24-16 loss to San Francisco on Oct. 31 in London. Denver surrendered 21 unanswered fourth-quarter points.
"We can come back and start with a statement," defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson said. "And we either make a statement or our season keeps going how it was going."McDaniels' offense needs to get going after getting shut out in the first quarter for the sixth straight game versus the 49ers. Denver, averaging 16.8 points during its skid, has scored a league-worst seven points in the opening 15 minutes of the game."You get started early, that gives you a boost on offense and that kind of helps the defense out early and then you're kind of in the driver's seat if you're scoring early in the game," wide receiver Eddie Royal said.
Although running back Knowshon Moreno is improving from early season hamstring injuries, the Broncos are averaging a league-low 67.2 rushing yards.The Chiefs secondary can expect to see plenty of action with Kyle Orton ranking fifth in the NFL with 316 attempts. The Broncos quarterback, expected to play after suffering bruised ribs in the 49ers loss, has a number of outside threats, including Royal, Jabar Gaffney and Brandon Lloyd, who leads the league with 878 receiving yards.In the Jan. 3 loss, Orton threw for 431 yards -- second-most in his career -- while Gaffney had career highs with 14 catches and 213 yards.The Chiefs' Dwayne Bowe has six of his seven TD receptions in the last four weeks.Denver dropped four straight twice last season but hasn't had a longer losing streak since a six-game stretch capped by a 31-20 defeat at Kansas City on Dec. 9, 1990.The Chiefs have dropped their last three road games by a combined 17 points.
