Joining The Drug Enforcement Agency

The Drug Enforcement Agency or DEA is an agency that prosecutes the growing

, manufacture and distribution of controlled substances in the United States of America. DEA agents are a special group of men and women who are trained specifically enforce the federal drug laws. They come from diverse educational backgrounds and this is used to train them for specific tasks that come with being a DEA agent. They bring to justice organizations that are involved in drug-related crimes. They are in charge of enforcing the Controlled Substances Act. They work to dismantle drug trafficking rings, prosecute drug traffickers and destroy the financial infrastructure of organizations involved in drug trafficking.

The responsibilities of the drug enforcement agency include the following:

* Investigating violations of domestic and international narcotics traffickers

* Investigating and preparing for the prosecution of criminals and drug gangs

* Collecting, analyzing and distributing drug intelligence information

* Seizing of assets derived from illegal drug trafficking

* Other drug-related tasks and responsibilities

Becoming an agent in the DEA is not an easy task. You must be a US citizen in excellent physical condition and aged between 21 and 36. A bachelors degree is required and special consideration is given to those who have degrees in Criminal Justice, Police Science or other related fields. Degrees in finance, accounting, economics and foreign languages are also given preference.

One of the duties a DEA agent has to perform is making narcotics arrest. To protect the rights of citizens, there are laws to make sure that proper procedures are followed for drug and drug-related arrest. These laws have been passed by both the State and Federal governments of the US.

A person has to be tested at the police station for the presence of alcohol or drugs if they are arrested for a DUI. In some states, an offender is tested through a breathalyzer in the field prior to arrest. However, the officer must have reasonable suspicion to conduct such a test.

The police must have probable cause to search or arrest a person for drug possession. If the person behaves in the way that people under the influence typically do, then that justifies probable cause. When the person is arrested, the officers can search their vehicle and their clothing. Additional possession or trafficking charges can then be brought. When the case goes to trial, the police must be able to show that they had probable cause for the arrest in order for their discoveries to be admitted as evidence.
