The US Open is known as one of the premier events in the men's golf world. The US Open is one of 4 events known as "major tournaments." These major tournaments include the US Open, British Open, Masters and PGA Championship. The US Open is the tournament that is particularly celebrated in the United States as it is the tournament for the United States.

The US Open in 1973 is remembered as one of the great tournaments of all time. The tournament was played at the Oakmont Country Club. The reason why the tournament is so famous is because of the amazing play from Johnny Miller. While Miller is not remembered with the names like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, he did have one of the best moments in the history of golf.

The course was certainly proving difficult for golfers on the day that Miller was amazing. Only 4 golfers managed to have a score that was below 70 during the day. While nobody else seemed to be finding success, Miller was poised to make a run up the charts.Johnny Miller beats Arnold Palmer at 1973 U.S. Open golf tournament

Miller was actually only in 12th place to start the round. It was the final round and it appeared that he would be out of reach of the tournament lead. The golfer had very little success in his career prior to the tournament in terms of winning tournaments. While he had managed to finish in the top 10 several times in previous years at major tournaments, he only had 2 total victories on the PGA in his career.

Miller didn't start the round amazingly, but he really caught fire after the 8th hole. His only bogey of that historic day came on the 8th hole, but he responded. Between holes 9 and 13 he knocked down 4 birdies. By the 14th hole he managed to find a share of the lead for the tournament. He responded with a birdie on the 15th hole. This birdie gave him the lead. He continued solid until the 18th hole. He had a chance to putt for birdie on the 18th hole. This birdie putt looked like it was going into the hole, but managed to hit the lip and roll off of the edge of the hole. He finished the round with a 63. This would leave him at 5 under par for the tournament despite starting the tournament with mediocre scores.

While he had an amazing finish, he still had not solidified his spot as the champion of the tournament. Arnold Palmer was tied for the lead and it looked like his own fate was in his hands. Ultimately he choked under the pressure that Miller put on him. He bogeyed on three straight holes between 12 and 14 and finished with a score that would be good enough to tie him up with Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino for fourth place.

The runner up for the tournament would be John Schlee, finishing one stroke behind Miller. Tom Weiskopf finished in third place with a score that was two strokes off of the lead.
