Johannesburg Guide And Flights To Johannesburg

Johannesburg is the economic power house of not only South Africa

, but Africa itself. The city was started and grew exponentially as a result of the Gold rush, with Johannesburg being built atop massive gold reserves. This gave the city its nickname of Egoli, or Place of Gold.

Most people know Joburg as the business centre of South Africa, but as a tourist there are quite a few things to do. The Johannesburg Zoo is built on 54 acres and is definitely worth a visit to see the various animals they have. The Melville Koppies, which was declared a nature reserve has excellent hikes and walks. If you enjoy being outdoors then it is worth visiting Emmarentia Dam where you can have a picnic, enjoy some sailing and even hire canoes. The Lion Park is another fantastic place to go. You can learn about how lion cubs are raised, as well as even get into the enclosure to play with the smaller cubs.

If you enjoy history, then the Sterkfontein Caves are one of the best historical finds in the world. This is in the Heart of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site.

Apart from all of these places of interest, undoubtedly two of the highlights of Johannesburg are its shopping options and nightlife. There are literally too many shopping centres to mention, but you will be able to find almost anything that you are looking for. Two of the better known shopping malls are Sandton City and Rosebank. The Joburg nightlife is famous in South Africa. Clubs are numerous and very different, with their being a club to suit almost anyones tastes.

Johannesburg, being a major city, has a very large and busy airport. There are flights all around the country with flights to cape town taking around 3.5hrs and those to Durban being about 1hr. Almost all international flights go via Johannesburg International Airport (OR Tambo) with direct flights to both America and Europe.
