Job Aspirations Of An Accountant

Accountancy, the profession practiced by accountants

, is the art of measuring, organising and explaining a companies financial information to the businesses stockholders and management officials. Evidence and artefacts found in the Middle East suggests that the vocation of accountancy dates back more then 7000 years, back to an era when accountants dealt with crops and livestock, not figures and sums.

The course of action taken by tax officials, independent investors and business managers often relies on the accountant's publication of a corporation's fiscal state, and the advice and suggestions of the accountant can prove vital in deciding the best course of action for a company to take. The modern day business structure means that accountancy has become a highly valuable, utterly necessary profession.

Due to the professions importance, becoming an accountant is far from easy. Aside from attaining a university degree, prospective accountants must be willing to continue learning the profession for many years into their initial employment if they wish to gain recognised qualifications in the skill. It is arguable that the course studied in university has little impact when it comes to accountancy, as all prospective accountants are fully trained and educated by the companies that employ them after university.

Despite the difficulty of the profession, many people wish to become accountants, and wish to work in one of the Big Four accountancy companies. The Big Four, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst & Young and KPMG, are the four biggest accountancy and auditing corporations, all of which employ hundreds of thousands of people, and turn over billions in profit. The Big Four are all international corporations, with offices and buildings situated in hundreds of cities across the world. All of the Big Four, along with many smaller accountancy firms, have offices situated in Manchester city centre.

Employees have many reasons to find the Big Four, and other international corporations desirable. The chance travel and relocate, to gain personal experience of different nationalities is available, thanks to the company's international locations. The lure of a large salary and powerful promotions also proves a draw to prospective employees, and all of the Big Four offer a serious chance of internal progression.
