Joan Jett Showed That Girls Can Rock A Gibson Guitar

Women sometimes seem sadly under-represented as guitarists

, but the sight of Joan Jett and a Gibson guitar has to stand up there as one of the most iconic images in rock n roll history.

Many younger fans may have developed an awareness of the music of Joan Jett due to the motion picture of The Runaways. With Kirsten Stewart and Dakota Fanning in the lead roles, it brought the group to a new audience and the sight of the Joan Jett character tearing up the stage with a Gibson guitar was a recurring theme throughout the film. The impact that The Runaways had on girls picking up instruments was huge and there would be many acts, like The Donnas, who owe their entire career to the efforts of Joan Jett and the rest of the girls.

A band like The Runaways was never built to last though and upon their split in 1979, Joan headed to London where the punk music scene was still in full flow. Joan Jett immediately started working with punk legends Steve Jones and Paul Cook, laying down tracks that would eventually go on her debut album. In 1980, Joan Jett launched herself as a solo artist and once again, the Gibson guitar was all over the record, which continued with the vibrancy and energy that The Runaways were known for.

Recruiting "three good men" as her backing band, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts took to the road and quickly established themselves as a major draw on the club circuit. A night watching Joan Jett was always going to be a night of action and the high energy levels shown by the guitarist has always been one of her trademarks. In an era when video technology was making it easier for bands to get off the treadmill of the live touring circuit, Joan Jett, with her trusty Gibson guitar in tow, was hitting the country harder and faster than ever before.

It is not as though The Blackhearts totally ignored the emergence of music television though and the band was to scoop one of the major hits of the early music TV era. "I Love Rock N Roll" was re-recorded and released in 1982, becoming one of the biggest hits of the year. Jett's rendition of the song is undoubtedly the most famous and influential and has been the backdrop for many covers over the years, including one by Britney Spears. The impact that Joan Jett has had on females in the music industry has been phenomenal in the past three decades, but you would also like to think that she has inspired a number of boys as well.

There can be a tendency to split musicians into male and female sections with the number of males greatly outnumbering the females. Joan Jett has shown that there is absolutely no reason why the girls cannot rock as hard as the boys. The singer has been responsible for countless girls over the years deciding that they too want to pick up a Gibson guitar and show who really makes the best rock n roll music!
