As with most veterans returning from the war, James Avery did not have an immediate plan for his future. He dabbled in various crafts including furniture making. He began his jewelry business quite by accident. His first inspiration came from a very simple, yet powerful cross he saw while on a trip to Colorado. Following his return, James Avery created his own cross. After his friends noticed this cross on a string hanging from his neck, they began asking him to make jewelry for them. And so an institution was born.
He has become a household name in jewelry design. One of James Avery's most important design elements that make him so popular is his ability to incorporate the simple things in his jewelry. But don't let his idea of simplicity fool you. The individual elements may be of basic subjects, but his use of these subjects can be quite intricate. Both of his sons currently hold the company's top managerial spots following James Avery's step down from running day to day operations. James Avery's commitment to his customers and community is evident with his work with the Girl Scouts of America. Over the course of his lifetime he has given away thousands of charms to the GSA as rewards for selling cookies. These and other community gestures are what has kept the James Avery brand near the top in the jewelry marketplace.
