Jaisalmer Fort was built in 1156 and is the second oldest forts in the state of Rajasthan

. This magnificent fort also known as Sonar Quila is a perfect example of Indian craftsmanship and military magnificence. It is one of the oldest existing forts of Rajasthan after Chittorgarh. The fort is situated atop of the Trikuta hill amidst the sandy terrain of the Great Thar Desert.

Initially the fort was built in the 12th century by Raja Jaiswal who shifted his capital from Lodurva to protect it from foreign invasions. The 250 feet tall wall fortified this fort from all sides and can be accessed through 30 feet sandstone pathway. The fort is famous for its 99 bastions which were used as platforms for guns. Out of the 99 bastions 92 of them were built between 1633 and 1647.

Inside the fort complex tourists can find several architectural buildings which include palaces, houses and temples made up of soft yellow sandstone. The fort has narrow winding pathways which interconnect several parts of the fort. The complex of Jaisalmer fort is so spacious that almost one quarter of the towns population resides in this.

Inside the fort there are various palatial structures which enthrall tourists during their Jaisalmer Fort Tour. The most famous palatial structures such as the Maharawals located in front of the Chauhata Square. The foremost attraction of this place is Maharawals marble throne which is placed over a flight of marble steps. Another famous attraction of this place is a five-storied Tazia tower located adjacent to the Maharawals palace. This tower was constructed by Muslim craftsmen and is decorated with ornate Bengali styled roofs.

The Jawahar Palace is among the other attractions of this fort which was the residence of a royal family. This place is famous for its beautiful construction and ornate design which captivate tourists attention during their visit to this palace. Ganesh Pol, Rang Pol, Bhoota Pol and Hava Pol are the entrance gates of this fort which is known for sculptured beauty and beautiful design.

Also inside the fort there are many beautiful Merchant havelies and a group of Jain temples dating from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Merchant Havelis are large and ornate houses of wealthy merchants of previous days. These havelis are known for their beautiful and ornate sandstone carvings with decorated balconies, archways, windows, and doors. Some of the havelis are famous for their exquisite wood carvings of doors and ceilings.
