Since battles between the Sri Lankan Army and the Tamil Tigers came to an end Jaffna and its magnificent beaches are accessible to the traveler after many years. Visitors can even visit some of the iconic sites of the city such as the Jummah Mosque, Kanabady Kovil, Our Lady of Refuge Church, Pillaiyar Kovil and St Marys Cathedral. Although the land here is dry, various palm varieties can be found in the area. These trees are a priceless resource for the locals in the area and visitors should not forget to sample a cup of toddy tapped from these trees, a famous local beverage.
Jaffna, unlike the rest of the island is unique in the sense that it practically has its own cuisine. Although many of the same dishes can be found at restaurants featuring Sri Lankan cuisine in other part of the country, the different herbs and spices which are used when preparing these dishes give it a distinct taste and aroma. The untouched beaches of Jaffna are the icing on the cake as far as the discerning traveler is concerned.
