Online piracy is on a high these days. The Entertainment industry has suffered a considerable loss of revenue because of the infringed material available over the internet. In most of the countries, the ISPs are being engaged to overcome the digital piracy, but recently, one of the leading internet service providers in Australia has given a red signal to the authorities. The ISP stated that it is not the responsibility of the service provider to check for the possible online piracy, and they just offer hassle-free internet for their clients to use their own way. Adding restrictions would help us go nowhere, as our job is just to offer internet connectivity to our clients, and the concerned authorities must deal the issues such as online piracy, added the ISP spokesperson.
The movie and music industries of most of the countries are of the view that the ISPs must send warnings and notifications to the users, whenever they go for an illegal site. It can help people educate about the online piracy, as most of the users are unaware about the online piracy, and specifically, the pirated sites. Negotiations between the Entertainment industry and the ISPs are notable in US, France and New Zealand.
The negotiations did not go well in Australia, where the ISPs have given the verdict mentioned above. The failure of the negotiations in Australia is not the end of the road, as the entertainment industry of almost every country is striving hard to get the job done. The entertainment industry is involved in this campaign big time, not only to overcome the online piracy, but also to enjoy the digital sales, which have dropped considerably since the emergence of pirated sites.
The ISPs worldwide are of the view that everyone should do his duty without interfering in others work. ISPs are working to provide internet connectivity to their clients, and they cannot restrict or limit online surfing of their clients. It is up to the users to go for infringed material or not. This is where the role of the concerned authorities comes into play. They should take strict actions against the pirated sites operating online.
The entertainment companies have urged the ISPs to track the user details in case of illegal infringement online. The service providers, saying that the user information has to be kept confidential at all costs, as it is a violation to track or retain customer data, have turned the request of entertainment industry down.
ISP spokesperson further added that tracking and retaining the user data is not a piece of cake. It requires expertise and additional bucks, but above all, it is not the responsibility of the ISPs to carry out this task.
Most of the entertainment studios worldwide including the Hollywood Studios have put thorough effort in negotiating with the ISPs. The idea does not seem to work out well at this point, but the talks are still underway. Whatever the wind blows, it is high time for the industry to overcome the online digital piracy.
