A majority of the religious beliefs in the world are of the strong suggestion that sex should only be done by a legally married couple. Unfortunately, most of the first world countries and the western culture presuppose that teens will go on and have sex. This has let to a low view of abstinence as it is now seen as a losing battle by the religious groups and especially Christianity.
Christianity, like many other religions dictates that a young person should wait till marriage to experience this divine gift given by God. The bible teaches that fornicators and adulterers will not enter the kingdom of heaven. This therefore means that teen abstinence is in line with the Holy teachings.
Sometimes they tend to assume that they are destined to be as one for the rest of their lives. The relationship may last two or three years and here, the teens start reasoning that, if they have been together for three years, then they can manage being together for the rest of their lives. At some point, the shallow relationship comes to a natural death but still, they will have to stay put in those relationships in order to save face.
A good number of teens are practicing abstinence. Being a virgin is actually something teens respect and with proper guidance from parents, with clear directions on how to remain chaste, teens are actually willing to practice abstinence. Parents should nip the bud while they are still young and get to know the rotten eggs in their kid's friends list. All communication lines should be open and even if the teen has already had sex, the parent's main focus should be to persuade this teen to remain chaste.
It is defeatist to think that it is unavoidable for a teen to engage in sex because every person was born with the ability to practice self control. Teens who practice abstinence will in future be well equipped to exercise restraint when they are faced with a number of issues. What needs to happen is for parents to start talking to their children earlier that the rotten world does. Eliminate all the loopholes that you can and know the kinds of friends your teens mingle with. In the end, abstinence is very possible for teens and it should be the first choice.
