If you are not covered then you can get a temporary travel insurance policy during your travel time period. If a problem arises do contact the US Embassy in the country where you are, they will provide whatever help you need and they are available around the clock. Use good sense as far as displaying cash and jewelry, if you are in a very poor country this could bring unwelcome attention.
